And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness. Genesis 15:6
Before the Word became flesh, and even before the law came through Moses, and even before Abram’s name was changed to Abraham…He believed the Lord, and it was counted to him as righteousness. Righteousness has always been through believing, through faith in God. When you feel like you “should” be doing more, perhaps instead you should focus on believing God more. Believing first, good works is the result. Works apart from believing is a common type of religion. So how do we come to a place of believing? How does one believe in anything?
Let’s check out Romans 10
Romans 10:13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?”
- God sent Jesus, who sends disciples
- Disciples will preach and share the Gospel
- Some will hear and call on the name of the Lord.
Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
So how would one keep growing in faith? Keep hearing. Well…how do I do that? Some things that come to mind include: prayer, being in his word, trusting him and paying attention when by grace he does what he does in my life. Having and praying for an attentive ear. May we always be thankful.
The person you have faith in?
Let’s consider your car breaks down today. Among all the people you know, friends and family members, who do you call? Whoever that may be, you have faith in that person. How did you get that faith? You heard them at some point, and got to know them. You began to trust them through circumstances because at some point you called on them when you needed them, and they were there. You didn’t muster up faith, that person gave you faith in them – most likely through there grace and love for you. Whether you know it or not, Jesus has always been there for you, through it all. God has always been there with so much grace, love and sacrifice. Do you remember the first time you called on God’s help and he answered – saving you in more ways than one?
Whether you are a newly born again Christian or have been walking this walk for awhile, there is something that you can call on the Lord for – even today. You don’t have it all together and if you think so, you may have taken a left on pride place. If that comment about pride annoyed you, you’re at the cul-de-sac, turn around. Pride hates being called out.
I confess, I too fight pride in one way or another – every day. When you think about it for awhile, bottom line, it is pride that keeps us from sharing the Gospel with all creation. (see Mark 16:15). Anyways. So I ask myself now, what is it? God, what is something specific that is going on in my life, that I need to call on you for? What am I trying to accomplish on my own steam, when truly I need to be calling on you? I believe if you ask God with an honest heart, he will reveal something to you, as he’s already beginning to speak to my heart about this as I write.
May God continue to bless you with righteousness that comes from believing Him. God has blessed you. May we continue to call on Him.
All glory be to God. Amen.
