When Jesus was baptized he came out of the water and God spoke saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” After this Jesus was led into the wilderness and fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. He was hungry and the tempter came and said to him.
“If you are the Son of God, command these stones to be loaves of bread.” Matt: 4:3
What is Satan doing? Is he simply tempting Jesus to eat or is he tempting Jesus to prove God has already stated. God said, “this is my beloved Son”, Satan’s challenge, “If you are the Son…”.
Has God spoken a truth over you that the enemy is challenging? How do you respond? Let’s see how Jesus responds.
But he answered, “it is written, “‘Man shall not live on bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
May it be that God has the last word and we believe him at his word. We can live by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Furthermore, Jesus is the word made flesh. He is the truth, and our salvation is made possible by his finished work at the cross. So the next time the devil whispers, “if you’re really saved you would….”, you can respond with, “it is written…”
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
