I read this Old Testament story of a man by the name of Joshua, who was to take over where Moses left off. He was given the position to lead the people to inherit the promised land. And God spoke with him, preparing him for the work he had in store for him. “Be strong and courageous”, several times God said this to him. Being strong and courageous wasn’t even a suggestion for Joshua, but a commandment. God also instructed Joshua to meditate on the word day and night.
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
I think this verse makes for a great memory verse. Every day we go about our way, we need to be strong and courageous knowing God is always with us always. To meditate on his word day and night is something that I can do better. To meditate on his word, I need to be in it, reading it often. I’ll admit, there’s days I get to wrapped up in the daily routine of work, family and my own thing. However, I want to continue building my relationship with Jesus in every way I can. And what a great way to learn more about Jesus, by digging into his instruction manual for us.
I recently started a new plan with Youversion, the old testament in one year. It sends me 3 chapters a day. So basically what I do is read one or two chapters in the morning, and one or two chapters in the evening before bed. In doing this I hope to learn and grow while taking on a couple of the instructions given to Joshua. The instruction to be strong and courageous in everything I do and to meditate on the word day and night. As I come across a story or a single verse that jumps out at me, I can take that verse and meditate on it through the day. By doing this, I’ll be ready for the tasks that God may place in my path.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
Psalm 119:105 ESV
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
