Today I am writing to mostly myself, as this is often how these articles are born. I’ve been thinking on the subject of walking in the Spirit, and just want to write out some thoughts about this and what I believe.
I firmly believe it is possible to walk in the Spirit every day – not just on good days. Otherwise he would not have gave us the instruction to do so. Yet I have had my share of failures with this. But I choose not to believe based on experience but on the word of God. And his word says over and over and over – walk in Spirit. I can choose to trust my experiences and the experiences/opinions of others, or I can trust God’s word.
For example Romans 8, Galatians 5, 1 John….
However, I believe it is a choice I must make on a daily basis. It doesn’t start with hitting my knees and saying fill me fill me fill me. Maybe this has worked for some… Sometimes hitting my knees in repentance can help bring me to a spirit filled walk. Yet, as a Christian I already have Holy Spirit and what a blessing he is to me. He is in me, and if you’ve put your faith in Christ…He’s in you too. We can continue putting our faith in God by believing his own word on this.
So this is my challenge. I have approached his word as a child, not some great philosopher, and I believe this daily spirit filled walk is not some difficult formula to figure out.
First I want to set my eyes on Him, who he is, what he’s done, what he does…
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
I John 4:8 NKJV
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.””
John 4:24 NKJV
[Christ Jesus] “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.”
Colossians 1:15 NKJV
Is it fair to say the following:
to walk in the Spirit is to walk for, with, and in Gods love – and walk in God’s love for others – no matter what may result. To walk for God with the motivation to love others just as Jesus loves us, and to walk like He walked, as his disciple. To make walking out his love our mission for God our Heavenly Father, and for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
What stops you and I from walking for him, with him and in his love? How can you do this in the next 15 minutes? This may be as simple as making a decision paying a little closer attention to the person talking to you or sitting next to you at your workplace, or at home. It doesn’t have to be some emotional feeling. It’s having a heart to love as he did. Maybe its a text to someone, “love you”. You are so loved. Today is an opportunity to let his love in you bubble up and bless another!
The only thing that can stop you and me is the fleshly desires that rage war within us, which must be put to death the moment they surface. Deal with the problem – believe the truth of his word over that thought or situation. For this to be a continuous daily lifestyle, every part of my fleshly desires must be crucified, with fully devoted faith in our Lord Jesus, completely surrendered to God’s plan, which is a better plan – the best plan.
We are children of God, saved by his grace, never will be left nor forgotten based on his promised word; his love endures forever!
Walk in spirit and love. Here are some questions that I am asking myself, and may also help you along your way:
Is their someone I need to forgive?
Have I sinned? Do I need to ask forgiveness of another or from God?
Is there someone I need to have a talk with?
Is there someone I need to confess to?
Continue with Love:
Knowing the truth of his love for you, and filled with his love, who can you love today?
Who needs some encouragement?
For his glory, who can use my help or service today or even planned for this weekend?
How can I be more loving to the people who are in front of me throughout the day.
Who doesn’t know God, who doesn’t know about what Jesus did on the cross and the resurrection – who doesn’t know and how can I go about bringing this news that person.
Thank you Jesus for what you did, for giving us freedom. Thank you Father for adopting us as your own. I am eternally grateful.
