We were designed by God, the one who defines love. We were built for a purpose. Sometimes I wonder if God, as our creator, ever gets annoyed with us. Imagine for a moment, you invent the toothpick. You go to the inventors fair, you got your own booth, and hand them out to everyone. You start to see everyone attempt using them for everything else but their designed purpose and now everyone is getting frustrated. One person combs their hair with it, the other begins using it as a fork. Eventually they give up and throw it into the next garbage can they walk by. Some hold onto them thinking, maybe someday I’ll find a use for this, as they walk around continuing to pick at their teeth with their fingernail. Then there are a few others who know the purpose of this toothpick in hand, but are slow to use it for that little piece of steak causing all the discomfort. Instead they intentionally walk around, looking a little disfigured in the face, as they continue trying to tongue it out.
But then, a slice of hope. You look across the fair and your eyes come across a person actually using their toothpick for its intended purpose. They looks so happy and satisfied with having no food stuck in their teeth. You are thrilled. YES! you scream. People walking by with their goodie bags stop for a moment to see what you’ll say next. Look! You point out the person who achieved tooth pick success. That’s how its done! You abandon your booth and run up to this person to thank them. You hand them some more toothpicks and say, “here’s some more, please tell the others how it works”.
As Christians we are to follow his ways, because his ways work and we were designed for this purpose. Living by his instruction leads to a joyful, satisfied, fulfilled (no steak stuck in the teeth) feeling. It’s not always easy using a toothpick, and its not always easy following Christ, but the end result makes it all worth it.
