I recently googled the phrase, who discovered the earth was round and came across several references to Pythagoras including this one below – which sat on top of the results…
“It has actually been known that the Earth was round since the time of the ancient Greeks. I believe that it was Pythagoras who first proposed that the Earth was round sometime around 500 B.C.”
After the Greek philosophers Pythagoras, in the 6th century BC, and Parmenides, in the 5th, recognized that the Earth is spherical, the spherical view spread rapidly in the Greek world. Around 330 BC, Aristotle maintained on the basis of physical theory and observational evidence that the Earth was spherical.
So what’s the Bible have to say about a round earth?
27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there,
When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,
Written Around 900 B.C.
21 Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood since the earth was founded?
22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,
and its people are like grasshoppers.
He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,
and spreads them out like a tent to live in.
Written Around 700-681 B.C.
Interesting. Roughly 400 years later, after being written in the Book of Proverbs, and then Isaiah, Pythagoras comes along and proposes the World is round, and has been given credit, for it even today.
